LESSON 2 (PRACTICAL)
Sew on NEWS PAPER and PRINTED PAPERS
Printable Practice Sheets are a great way to practice stitching without wasting too much fabric or thread. These printable tutorials are best to learn how to sew well. You can use an extra dull needle or even skip the needle until you feel confident .Plus, with so many options, these are great way to practice for every level of sewing.
For the Beginners when you are going to handle machine for the first time, following instructions are to be followed:
printed papers for practice:
Domestic Sewing machine with handle:
In handling this machine the control of speed is in our hands. Keep your hands away from the needle and then start practicing on newspaper. Make sure we are going to practice on paper without thread.
Step 1 Lift the ‘pressure foot’ up by lifting up the ’pressure foot lifter’.
Step 2 Set the position of machine needle to the upward position and place a paper beneath the pressure foot.
Step 3 Lower down the pressure foot.
Step 4 Keep your fingers away from the needle and start operating your machine slowly.
Step 5 As you are going to operate your machine with your right hand make sure to hold the paper with the left hand.
Step 6 The movement of the paper should be compatible with the movement of paper and sew along the printed pattern.
Domestic Sewing machine with Table Stand:
Table stand attachment makes the operation of machine easier. The operator doesn’t feel much tired while working as compared to the simple hand operated machine. The operator has to control the machine with the foot.
Step 1 Follow the above given steps.
Step 2 You have to practice a good coordination between FOOT and PADDLE.
Step 3 So remove the needle until you have some practice as it may hurt your finger.
Domestic Sewing machine with Table Stand and Motor:
In a machine with motor and accelerator attachment it is needed to stay very conscious as in this the control has been shifted from the hand or from the foot to the speedy motor. For the beginners I would like to suggest you to go first for above given options of Sewing machines as operating the ‘direct motorized’ machine would be a little hurry to learn. We will be moving step by step firmly ahead.
Step 1 All above.
Step 2 I hope you have removed the needle from your machine.
Step 3 Start by making a coordination between your foot and hands by holding the paper.
Try to make straight parallel runs of your machine. Your practice of about 1-2 hours will build up the coordination and you will start feeling smooth with your machine. Machine with table stand and a motor can take some longer time. With a continuous practice of operating straight sewing you will be able to make straight lines on newspaper.
INDUSTRIAL SEWING MACHINE:
Printed Paper Practice Sheets
Operating of Industrial Sewing Machine is almost same as traditional sewing, machine with table stand and motor. The plus point here is that in most of the direct drive industrial sewing machines, there are speed adjustment panels where you can adjust the speed of your choice. For the beginners it is advised to keep speed not more than 1000 RPM (Revolutions per minute) As you will be perfect in handling the machine in less speed. You can move on to high speed settings after some time.
So friends after having a good practice on straight runs on newspaper ,now we will be practicing to sew with needle on patterns.
Paper Practice: Here we will practice to run our machine with a needle on curves and points. Paper practice will enable you not only to make curvy seams but also controlling your speed while sewing on paper.
Paper practice Sheets: These sheets are printed papers having Curves, Circles, Semi Circles, Zigzag, Square on them. For the beginners Paper practicing is recommended than the fabric practice as it reduce the wastage of fabric. Here above I have shown you the samples of practice sheets. You can get printout of these sheets and can practice on them. As well you will practice sewing on curves and squares, the more you will be perfect in sewing on fabric.

Way to Start: Friends as you have done in case of newspaper, and have a good practice of straight sewing. Now is the time to move hands on shapes by making seams.
Note : Before start to sew on paper you have to increase the 'stitch length' using 'stitch regulator' as short stitch length can tear off the paper, reduce the machine speed.
1 Raise the pressure foot by using 'knee lifter'
2 Set the printed lines beneath the needle.
3 Start sewing by lowering the needle.
4 Start stitching slowly by holding paper with left hand and practicing to move hands on curves.
About one-week good practice of rotating needle on printed seams will make you perfect in handling curves. So friends, now at the end of this Lesson 2 you are cable of handling your machine confidently. In the next Lesson we will be learning “Threading of the Machine”. That’s all for this week.
