Step by step we would like to spread in your journey the lights of creations and confidence in yourself.
Lesson 1 -Understand your Machine
Types of sewing machines
In this lesson you will know about two types of sewing machines, that are used. One is house hold sewing machine and another is industrial sewing machine. Do you know the difference between both. Lets study about it.
Domestic sewing machine
This machine is used for small scale sewing purposes. It is used in house by the ladies for stitching. It is also used at boutiques or tailors shop. These can be driven manually :
1)By using hand through the handle attached at the balance wheel.
2) By using the foot paddle attachment, it becomes easy to drive the machine by Too and FRO movement of foot on foot paddle ,there by increasing the speed of sewing.
3) By using the attachment of motor and accelerator on to sewing machine. This increase the speed more than the foot attachments.
Industrial Sewing Machine
Industrial sewing machine is a heavy version of domestic sewing machines .It has the capacity to work day and night due to it's heavy duty internal parts. Heavy canvas and jeans are easily stitched on large scale on these machines. Now let me tell you about some general parts which are common in both domestic and industrial sewing machines. Friends before starting with our learning it is important for us to know our machine .
For more information about industrial sewing machine pls check the link given below:
These parts are :
1 Needle – Specialized needles are used for various sewing machines. The purpose of needle is to take the thread below the needle plate to the bobbin case to form the stitch.
There are two types of needles used for sewing fabric depending upon the shape of needles.
Domestic sewing machine – Flat Shank Needle
Umbrella Sewing Machine – Round Shank Needle
Industrial Sewing Machines – Round Shank Needle
We will be learning about needles in a separate lesson coming soon.
2 Needle screw - Needle screw is used to tighten the needle of sewing machine. It is to be clearly noted that the needle should be set to the extreme top in to the needle bar and it should be fixed tightly with needle screw.
3 Needle plate - It is a metal plate fixed under the pressure foot. It is fixed with two screws on the machine. It allows the needle to penetrate through it's holes ,so as to form stitches .It is also called as throat plate.
4 Slide Plate – Slide plate is a metallic plate to the side of the needle plate on the bed of sewing machine. As the name suggests it is the sliding plate which can be dragged out wards. It gives open space to access the bobbin zone under the sewing machine and other maintenance work .
5 Pressure foot - Pressure foot is an attachment used with sewing machine .It put pressure on to the fabric when it is fed to the machine while sewing. It prevents the fabric to lift up along with the needle .It is fixed to a bar called pressure bar.
6 Pressure Bar –It is a metallic bar to which the pressure foot is attached.
7 Pressure Regulator – As the name suggests it is a regulator which is at the upper top most of a pressure bar. It’s purpose is to create the pressure of the pressure foot on fabric. It can be adjusted as per the thickness of fabric. As if the fabric is too thick then it is to be set loose so as to avoid much pressure on the needle plate If the fabric is too thin then it is to be set to tight there by building pressure on the needle plate so as to make the thin fabric pass through it.
8 Pressure Foot lifter – It is a lever attached to the pressure bar .The purpose of this lever is to raise the pressure foot whenever the operator will lift the liver upwards.
9 Feed dog - It is a metal part that moves back and forth in slots in a sewing machine. There are cross cuts with diagonal teeth in to it. It's purpose is to feed the fabric to the needle for sewing.
10 Thread take up lever - Thread take up lever is fixed above the pressure foot of sewing machine .It pulls the thread from the spool and feed it to needle and also lifts the thread back up after the stitch is formed .It is the part that moves up and down while sewing.
11 Thread Guides – These are the metallic guides that takes the thread from the thread spool to the needle. These are important part of high speed machine so as to ensure the undisturbed approach of thread to needle.
12 Bobbin winder – Bobbin winder is the mechanism attached to the sewing machine so as to wind the thread in to the bobbin. It is generally found on the head of computerized Single Needle lock stitch machine and on the side towards the hand wheel in manual sewing machines.
13 Stitch regulator – Stitch regulator is the circular shaped dial mechanism attached to the sewing so as to adjust the stitch length of a sewing machine.
14 Reverse Stitch lever – Reverse stitch lever is the lever attached to the sewing machine so as to ensure the open ends of a seam. Pressing down this lever makes the machine sew backwards.
15 Tension post- The purpose of tension post is to adjust the tension of the thread spool .It is also called as tension disk and thread regulator .Operator can adjust the thread supply by using this post.
16 Finger Guard – It is a personal protective equipment attached to the pressure foot . It’s purpose is to guard the fingers of operator from getting hurt by the needle.
17 Display panel – The speed of the computerized machine is adjusted through this panel .It adjusts the RPM(Revolutions per minute) taken by the machine pulley which increase or decreases the machine speed.
18 Hand wheel/Balance wheel - Hand wheel or balance wheel is the round wheel located at the upper right of the sewing machine. An operator should always turn the wheel towards his/her side .It is used to fetch the thread from the bobbin case while starting to sew .It is also rotated manually at the end of the seam to draw the fabric out of machine.
19 Oil sight window – It is a widow display on the head of an industrial sewing machine that gives a glance of the presence of machine oil in sewing machine. When the machine runs in full speed the oil inside jumps upwards and can be seen through the window. This indicates the good internal condition of machine.
20 Bobbin case mechanism – Bobbin case mechanism consist of : Bobbin, bobbin case, hook race.
To form a seam on the fabric two threads work collectively. One is the thread from the needle and another is the thread coming from the bobbin .Needle carries the thread from bobbin case and forms a loop of thread with the help of hook race.
21 Knee lifter – Knee lifter is a machine part located beneath the bed of sewing machine. The purpose of knee lifter is to uplift the pressure foot by the means of knee .The position of knee lifter should be close to the knee of the operator while in sitting position, so as to make it easily operated.
22 Foot paddle – The purpose of foot paddle is to run the machine when the operator pushes it in downward direction with the foot.
23 Machine Pan – Machine pan is also called as oil pan. It is to be filled till the marked point with clear oil, as per the directions ,so as to maintain smooth working of sewing machine. These pans are available in industrial sewing machines.
Domestic sewing machines are generally needled to be oiled manually.
24 Thread Stand - It is a stand attached to the table of a sewing machine. It is designed to pull the thread off the top of the cone to a hole in the upper metallic strip, so as to ease the tension for the smooth sewing of fabric.
25 On/ Off - On/Off switch is used to start and to switch off the machine. When not in use machine should be first switched off from this switch and then from the switch attached to the cord.
